Pairing Socks

Pairing socks always takes me back to my college anthropology class where we discussed genetics and evolution.

This sock is black, thick, and has the ribs all the way up to the top.
This sock is black, thin, and has the ribs all the way up to the top.
This sock is black and thick, but the ribs stop just short of the top of the sock leaving a smooth rim.
Which one was first and which are the descendants?

In reality, none of them are descendants.  There's no right way to make a sock as long as it's a tube closed on one end and open on the other.  It doesn't even have to have a formally-turned heel on it.  But it still makes me think of that class.
